It is going to be glossed over with a quick comment and move on to business at hand. They will have had a huge behind the scenes brawl over the mis-handling of the puzzle by WS, but decided to act almost as if it never happened and was not important anyway. My Zoom meeting just ended so I will respond...Zeke,
My Zoom meeting just ended so I will respond to your skydiving fatality question as best I can.

Skydiving is regulated, or not, in each country according to what its government decides on. In our country it is regulated by the FAA, but not closely. Mostly the FAA leaves it up to USPA, The United States Parachute Association, to define the guidelines and attempt to regulate the sport. The FAA has some specific rules, but most of the control is left to USPA. So in our country it is rather lax and this has much to do with the FAA not being very knowledgeable about skydiving. The incident you are asking about happened in Toronto, Canada. I used to be asked to come on up there occasionally to train experienced skydivers to be Tandem Instructors. So I have had some experience jumping in Canada, but I really know almost nothing about how it is regulated there, if at all.

The accident you refer to apparently was a typical slow speed malfunction where the main parachute opens upon deployment, but one side is tangled which causes the ram air wing parachute to spin. Old style round parachutes do not experience this type of malfunction, but it is the most frequent type for ram air chutes. It is also very easy to deal with because it is not high speed.

Yes, there are gauges, called altimeters that most skydivers wear that indicate how far above the ground they are. But you have to look at them to know their reading at any given moment. There are devices called AAD's, automatic activation devices, that can be set to activate your reserve chute if you are going at high speed and are too low. Most student rigs in our country will have them, and I would assume Canada is the same, but I do not know for sure.

Skydiving is relatively safe as a sport, but following the accepted rules and knowing the precautions, etc. is important and, as with driving a car, your safety is also dependent on your attitude and respect for the rules.

You can never know from the media what the full story regarding a skydiving accident is. The reporters report what they are told, and it may or may not be what really happened, and the reporter will not be someone who is understanding of the sport anyway.

I have no way of knowing how many jumps this individual had, or how she was trained, or the answers to many other questions I would like to know. I could go on and tell you more of the thoughts that are bouncing around in my head as to this accident, but I will stop here, except to say one more thing, and it is not something you will want to hear, but it is a distinct possibility. I looked at several photos of this young woman and I cannot ignore the fact that she was very attractive and desirable. I hope this had no bearing on what happened to her, but it would not be the first time unscrupulous skydivers cut corners with an attractive female student in order to score some lustful desire that should not be influencing the instruction. I am not saying this is what happened in this case, but it needs to be looked into by the proper authorities up there.

I would caution you not to judge the sport by any single incident. skydiveboyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17174073226290431753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730391.post-64147121841448243922022-09-03T16:46:49.274-07:002022-09-03T16:46:49.274-07:00I apologize for the kerfuffle.
