NPR Sunday Puzzle (Nov 4): Fibonacci's Lieutenant

NPR Sunday Puzzle (Nov 4): Fibonacci's Lieutenant:
Q: Take a common three-letter word, move each letter three places later in the alphabet, the resulting letters can be re-arranged to spell a new word that is a synonym of the original. What are the two words? And here's a hint: all three letters in both words are in the first half of the alphabet.
Honestly, I haven't a clue...

Edit: Well, actually I wasn't being truthful. I did have a clue in the title. And my dishonesty was another clue.
A: FIB --> LIE

  1. Dude, you should try and post the spoiler after, not before the deadline. It took me ~ three days to figure it out. I was tempted to just take a database of three letter words that fall entirely in the first half of the alphabet and write a computer program to solve it. I still don't agree that fib is a common word.

  2. Sani, the deadline is Thursday at 3pm ET, so I was after the deadline. I agree that this week it was a difficult puzzle.

For NPR puzzle posts, don't post the answer or any hints that could lead to the answer before the deadline (usually Thursday at 3pm ET). If you know the answer, submit it to NPR, but don't give it away here.

You may provide indirect hints to the answer to show you know it, but make sure they don't assist with solving. You can openly discuss your hints and the answer after the deadline. Thank you.
