Q: Write out the 26 letters of the alphabet. Take a sequence of seven letters, change one letter in that sequence to a U, and rearrange the result to name something you might find in your refrigerator. Hint: The answer is a two-word phrase.Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour. But don't set your clocks back too far or you won't be able to get the answer at all... say 1963?
Edit: According to a couple sources, plastic milk jugs were introduced in 1964.
A: Take GHIJKLM, swap H for a U, rearrange to get MILK JUG
Here's my standard reminder... don't post the answer or any outright spoilers before the deadline of Thursday at 3pm ET. If you know the answer, click the link and submit it to NPR, but don't give it away here. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI hope there's an even dozen in my refrigerator.
ReplyDeleteI'll take the weasels by 7 over the rodents.
ReplyDeleteI don't have this in my refrigerator, but my grandmother did. Perhaps this puzzle is as old as Mensa, from 1946!
ReplyDeleteI love that kind of music!
ReplyDeleteGot it!
ReplyDeleteThe guy I get mine from is really, really tough.
ReplyDeleteThis puzzle, not so much :)
I didn't get your clue Blaine, until I thought of the movie "The Graduate"
ReplyDeleteHow about "Cabaret"?
ReplyDeleteThe bringer of today's solution
ReplyDeleteWas often a dear lad.
But sometimes there within the ranks
You'd find an awful cad.
With papa at work, the kids at school
And mama left alone,
The man would come to collect his fee
A fee you can't condone.
So if you're ever curious
Then anagram "dear lad".
Perhaps there is a chance that guy
Could be your _____ _____!
Didn't they make a movie about this guy?

ReplyDeleteNow that I think about it, I remember a rather scurrilous joke concerning the gentleman getting a Christmas gift from a customer :)
ReplyDeleteMakes me think of the group "The Lovin Spoonful"
ReplyDeleteHasn't been in my vegan family's fridge for a while, at least not from the usual source. However, I, who am a vegequarian (eat fish), got it occasionally and consider it contraband. Ha-Ha, How I loved thee as a child!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to find a Japanese beer company that supplied a refrigerator sized Fuji Keg.
ReplyDeleteHow odd. I heard Will say this puzzle was from "NASA's" calendar (not MENSA's). This put me in mind of galaxies and brown dwarfs.
ReplyDeleteHarvey, if you go the NPR website it says MENSA, not NASA. I like your clue, but your name is a good clue to the answer, too.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's how I learned I had mis-heard it. What's odd is that I think my mistake actually helped me solve the puzzle. Now to figure out how my name contains a clue....
ReplyDeleteHarvey, combine part of your name, with part of the answer...
ReplyDeleteGot it. Super!
ReplyDeleteI listened to the NPR tape and Will said Mensa.
ReplyDeleteMusical Hint: Glenn Miller

Maybe someone of the ilk of Judge Judy would be helpful in finding the answer.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of a Trevor Rhone film.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of the Raquel Welch film.
