Q: Think of a much-discussed subject in the news. Two words (five letters in the first, six letters in the last). The letters of the five-letter word can be rearranged to get the first five letters of the six-letter word. The six-letter word ends in a Y. What's the subject?Kind of...
Edit: A kind of book or movie would be a genre which is an anagram of the 5 letters.
A: GREEN ENERGY
Here's my standard reminder... don't post the answer or any hints that could lead directly to the answer (e.g. via Google or Bing) before the deadline of Thursday at 3pm ET. If you know the answer, click the link and submit it to NPR, but don't give it away here.
ReplyDeleteYou may provide indirect hints to the answer to show you know it, but make sure they don't give the answer away. You can openly discuss your hints and the answer after the Thursday deadline. Thank you.
I posted the following earlier this evening at the end of last week's posts:

I am jealous of those who have it.

I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed that today's Car Talk Puzzler is a different puzzle than the print version they posted on their web site, but the audio version is the one they used on the air.??????? I suspect the one they printed is the one they intend to use next Saturday. Those darn minions!

DeleteHail to the Victors!
ReplyDeleteThink of another 6 letter word ending with Y. Repeat and rearrange the first 5 letters to get a 3 word phrase that describes "The Lorax".
ReplyDeleteThe answer to today's challenge will be given on-air on 4/1/12, but I fail to see what it has to do with April Fools Day. Actually, I suspect it was meant to run last weekend, while the ACPT was in full contention.

ReplyDeleteHugh, I think your comment was a bit of a waste. Let the others put in a little effort as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I thought Hugh's answer was a dead giveaway. I thought Blaine would have deleted it - or maybe I have the wrong answer.
DeleteI'm glad that I solved the puzzle first before looking at this blog, otherwise I would have been disappointed to be spoiled by that comment.
DeleteSorry for my long absence; I think I had a bit of a puzzle fatigue. Hope everyone had a good St. Patrick's Day!
ReplyDeleteI confess I’ve felt somewhat lethargic about several recent puzzles but I feel revved up about this one. It’s a beautiful early Spring day here in St. Louis – bright and sunny with a balmy breeze. After I submit my answer I think I’ll head out for a bike ride.
ReplyDeleteChuck
I can think of a clue in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteDidn't have to chew on this one too long.
ReplyDeleteI envy those of you who get these answers so quickly!
ReplyDeletehugh thanks for ruining it for the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteWaste not want not!
ReplyDeleteVery curious. I gave a perhaps too obvious clue to what I now believe to be a cute, but plainly wrong answer. My apologies, and it's back to the puzzle for me to find the correct answer. Evidently I have reading and comprehension problems at 3AM.
ReplyDeleteOK, now I get it - so I deleted the clue which was supposed to lead to "Romney money".

Old Chunk of Coal - Johnny Cash
I found that if you take the last, 6 letter, name of a person who is in the news lately and ends with the letter Y, and take the first 5 letters and change one letter to an O, and rearrange these 5 letters, you come up with a word describing this person to many of us.
ReplyDeleteI can think of many musical clues, but they seem to be too obvious to me to post.
ReplyDeleteChuck, maybe you should take that bike in or around Tower Grove. I may take in a musical, maybe "An American Idiot" or "Little Shop of Horrors".
ReplyDeleteI'm so envious of you people who are able to solve these puzzles. I just don't have the motivation.
ReplyDeleteI love singing Im defying Gravity but I suppose I should be a bit more earthy at times
ReplyDeleteVery good comment.
DeleteThe much discussed subject must be Tim Tebow being traded to the NY Jets. J-E-T-S, Jets. Jets. Jets. Think of all the enthusiasm he will bring to the team!
ReplyDeleteOkay,
ReplyDeleteGot it narrowed down to "snide Disney" or "maids dismay".
Just kidding, but back to NCAA basketball. Rock Chalk Jayhawks, they have the raw talent and power to win it all this year!
Good clues. I got the answer as soon as I read yours, Emmanuel. Just got back from a snorkeling and whale watching trip on Maui and saw the answer while on the boat.
ReplyDeleteGlad I can help!! :-)
DeleteWednesday's puzzle is up on Tuesday. Better early than late. Hope it doesn't burden anyone too much.
ReplyDeleteThis way. Single file, please.
It's a good thing I'm not new to the Sunday puzzle, otherwise I would still be trying to figure this one out. Give me a cheer, why don't you.
ReplyDelete@Deborah, I used to cheer for Dartmouth College. Those fans certainly would understand while overstanding in the stands
ReplyDeleteMaybe its not discussed in the news often enough.
ReplyDeleteHere’s a URL for all you NPR groupies: an original music video commenting on – and rhyming – the many unusual names of NPR personalities including our own beloved Will Shortz :)

That was awesome! For anyone that is wondering, Will and Audie are mentioned at 1:17
DeleteGREEN ENERGY
ReplyDeleteI wrote: "I am jealous of those who have it."
Rather than use ENVY I used JEALOUS to indicate GREEN. Later I noticed others were more bold.
Last Sunday I said: “I confess I’ve felt somewhat lethargic about several recent puzzles but I feel revved up about this one. It’s a beautiful early Spring day here in St. Louis – bright and sunny with a balmy breeze.”
ReplyDeleteRevved up, sunny and breeze were all trying to evoke GREEN ENERGY. But if you don’t like that...
There’s always PEARL REPLAY. They’re still talking about that time a radio station accidentally played the same Pearl Jam single twice in a row.
And not forgetting ROPES OSPREY. With the possible looming sequestration of a gazillion Defense Department dollars in last year’s budget and deficit deal, a favorite new multi-service military aircraft system that’s still in development may be out for the count.
Lastly, who could forget FOOL’S FLOOSY (phonetically). The recent Rush Limbaugh – Sandra Fluke controversy is still a hot topic of discussion :)
Chuck
GENRE is an anagram of GREEN.
ReplyDeleteHow about all the news stories concerning the emir's misery about that other theory which he considered to be sheer heresy?
ReplyDeleteBrian Brainy
Delete"I suspect it was meant to run last weekend, while the ACPT was in full contention," which was St. Patrick's Day, the day of the greatest green energy of the year.
ReplyDelete"Hail to the Victors" is the fight song of the University of Michigan whose colors are maize and blue and when mixed together, make green.
ReplyDelete"Didn't have to chew on this one too long" refers the current energy secretary, Steven Chu.
Chuck should have got my first clue, his bike ride in around Tower Grove Park which is located near the Missouri Botanical Garden, hence green. American Idiot is a musical based on the songs of the band Green Day. Little Shop of Horrors is a musical about a man eating plant. Aslo a song from the musical, Somewhere that's Green. And one of the orignal stars of the musical and movie verson is Ellen Greene.
ReplyDeleteAll right over my head :)
DeleteChuck
Chuck, we'll just have to take a bicycle tour of our fair city....., I. Just have to learn how to ride a bike first.
DeleteMy references were to the witch s green skin in Wicked - play from which I m defying gravity sprang and Dear old Dartmouth - Go Big Green!!
ReplyDelete@RoRo - got your Dartmouth reference but I liked the Wicked one better.
ReplyDeleteI was going for "(not) new " as a reference to being GREEN at something, and then "cheer for me" referring to the extreme ENERGY of cheerleaders.
New puzzle is up. Pretty easy. Please, no base hints this week.
ReplyDeleteThe new puzzle is up, and the answer I've submitted I feel is lacking an "-UP".
ReplyDeleteMusical clue: D.J. B. S.
ReplyDeleteForget baseball. I watched some great college basketball games today, played between the best teams in the country.
ReplyDeleteIndeed! (And also, very nice clue!)
