NPR Sunday Puzzle (May 3, 2026): Fore! Five!

NPR Sunday Puzzle (May 3, 2026): Fore! Five!
Q: Name a well-known comic actor (4,5) whose name is an anagram of two terms in golf (4 and 5 letters, respectively). Who is it?
It's been a few years since we've had a puzzle involving this actor. Surprisingly it didn't involve elements.

Edit: The other Seth Rogen puzzle was from December 2015. I think there could have been a puzzle where you change his first name to "Hyd" or "Nit" and get an element.
A: SETH ROGEN --> SHOT, GREEN

  1. Remove a two-letter company and rearrange the remaining letters to name a different game.

  2. If a letter repeats in the star’s name, remove all instances of that letter. Rearrange. You get something that might come to see his next blockbuster.

  3. Remove one letter from the comic actor’s name, rearrange, and get a term for something male golfers score consistently lower on than their female counterparts.

  4. Blaine’s wonderful site is a blessing for all serious puzzle solvers and writers. So much so it’s easy to forget that Will doesn’t produce his Sunday segment just for us. It’s targeted toward the Weekend Edition Sunday general audience – not for our small group.

    My preferred version of this week’s puzzle was considerably harder than what you see here. Will preferred a version that was easier to solve. Not that it wouldn’t be fun for this group to tear into something more challenging. But would it be more fun for a family sitting around the breakfast table? I think Will does a pretty good job targeting his puzzle selections appropriately. Even though they’re not aimed at us in particular.

    Anyway, I hope all here have fun solving this, though it probably won’t take all day :)

      Congrats, Chuck, nice puzzle at either difficulty level.

    3. Congrats!

      I do sense that Will likes to mix up the difficulty of the puzzles. Last week's was so easy that it wouldn't be unusual to have a harder puzzle this week. Well, this was harder (would have been difficult not to be harder than last week's puzzle), but I'm a bit surprised Will didn't go with the even harder version.

    1. Then you must know the pain I felt when Hump Bogey did not work.

      "Humping" (often referred to in golf as "goat humping") is a slang term for early extension in the golf swing. It occurs when a golfer’s hips thrust forward toward the ball during the downswing, rather than rotating backward, causing them to lose their posture and move closer to the ball at impact.

  25. My post - “I see a connection to last week’s puzzle. Anybody else?” …..followed by….”I guess nobody wants to acknowledge this connection or else it’s not too familiar.” - these were references to Seth Rogen’s recent role as Rabbi Neil in season 2 of the hit series “Nobody Wants This”.

    I used Blaine as a geography clue because Blaine lives in California (yet somehow manages to solve and post by 8am Eastern Time EVERY DAMN SUNDAY morning) and I loved Seth Rogen's role as Cal in The 40 Year Old Virgin.

  28. According to the Interweb: The GREEN Hornet is a 2011 superhero film ... Seth Rogen stars as the Green Hornet. Long SHOT is a 2019 romantic comedy film ... Seth Rogen stars as a journalist.

  29. This week's edition of Puzzleria! celebrates Mother's Day. It features our friend, master puzzlemaker Bobby Jacobs, who has composed a Valentine-themed loving pair of puzzles for our solving enjoyment.
    It is a “Merry Month-Of-‘Mayternal’ two-part-from-the-heart Appetizer,” dedicated to his mother, and titled, “My Mother is my Friend, my Mommy is my Buddy” (“Mother” & “Mommy” and “Friend” & “Buddy” are two pairs of words with which Bobby challenges us to find commonality (in the first part of this two-part Appetizer).
    We guarantee, and promise, that you will just love this Valentine gift-offering from Bobby to his mother... and to us!
    We shall "deliver" these "loving arrows from Cupid's quiver" via Puzzleria!.... very soon and spoonily, this very lovin' afternoon!
    Also on this week's menus:
    ~ a Schpuzzle of the Week (“...Back to the Few shooters?”) titled “Voiding the ‘Chase’, Avoiding a chase... Voiding banks of all portraits of Salmon P. Chase?”;
    ~ an "Up On The Hill, Down On The Farm" Hors d’Oeuvre titled "Political tactics vs creature comforts";
    ~ a Shakespearean Slice titled "Breakfast with the Bard";
    ~ a Bold & Brassy Dessert titled "Time on your fingers but not on your hands?" and
    ~ a Mediocre-Baker's Dozen (Eleven!) riffs of this week's excellent National Public Radio Challenge Puzzle created by our friend "Chuck" (aka Chad Graham), titled “...It’s good to reach the green green Bermuda/Bentgrass of Augusta.”
    'Twill be and especially fun-packed-full Puzzleria!, packed with Bobby's St. Valentine's crimson blended with Chad's "Masterful Green!"

    Little bit of a stretch with CARY GRANT/CART, ANGRY. CART makes a little more sense than ANGRY, I think. Still I must congratulate you, Wendy, for coming up with a fairly decent alternative answer. I saw Mr. Grant's name as well while trying to find the right answer, but I couldn't get anything out of it myself. But CART is in there!

  36. This week's online challenge comes from Joshua Green, of Columbia, Md. Think of a popular film franchise with many sequels. Hidden in consecutive letters inside its name is a place mentioned multiple times in the Bible. Replace that place with a single letter and you'll name a Major League Baseball team. What franchise and team are these?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey, Josh Green! Congrats!
    Hm. I don't have the answer yet, though. I have to admit I'm never totally sure I know what a 'film franchise' is.

For NPR puzzle posts, don't post the answer or any hints that could lead to the answer before the deadline (usually Thursday at 3pm ET). If you know the answer, submit it to NPR, but don't give it away here.

You may provide indirect hints to the answer to show you know it, but make sure they don't assist with solving. You can openly discuss your hints and the answer after the deadline. Thank you.
